Surgery / MEAW / Functional Appliances
An orthodontist told me my child needs surgery. Is there any other option?
Yes and No. In some cases surgery really is the only option. In others, however, other treatment options may exist that while they may not be as good as surgery, can still result in considerable improvement. Dr. Rubensteen, who has been trained to treat cases ranging from full surgical to mild crowding, will take the time to go through ALL the options and decide which option is BEST for YOU.
What is MEAW?
MEAW is an abbreviation for Multi-loop edgewise archwire. It is a fancy name for a system of elastics and wire bends that is able to improve the relationship of the jaws in patients that have an underbite (Class III bite) without surgery. The "technique" can sometimes even be applied to Invisalign. While the profile changes are not as substantial as with surgery, usually the bite can be improved considerably.
What is a functional appliance? Will my insurance cover it?
There are many names for the different functional appliances - MARA or Herbst are the two most common. These appliances are used in patients where the lower jaw sits far behind the upper jaw (Class II bite). These appliance help to posture (push) the lower jaw forward to improve the bite and jaw relationships. In many cases, insurance will cover part of your orthodontic treatment. For the the part that would be out of pocket, Dr. Rubensteen offers in house and 3rd party payment plans with monthly payments as low as $99 a month.
